Joseph 'Joe' is on a journey of life-long learning within the fields of Arts & Sciences.

He moved to Dublin, Ireland in 1981 and studied theatre at the prestigeous Stanislavsky Studio at the Focus Theatre under Deirdre O'Connell. He subsequently performed, directed and produced at the theatre until it's close in 2001.

In 1986, Joe became the first 'Alternative Miss Ireland', a pageant celebrating the beauty of diversity. The competition later became an annual event running for 21 years.

In the early 1990's, Joe lived in London and worked in the Wardrobe Dept. at the BBC HQ working on the diverse range of television programmes output by the station. During this time he also worked as an actor and director at the Questors Theatre.

On return to Ireland he enrolled in the Film production course at IADT, graduating with a B.Des. in 2000. In his graduate year he interned as Line Producer on the film 'CHICKEN', which was nominated for a Palme D'Or at the prestigeous Cannes Film Festival.

He later undertook a post-graduate degree in the field of Technology & Learning graduating with an M.Sc. (1:1) in 2008, acheiving a Microsoft Best Dissertation Award (joint).

Joe currently produces, films and edits environmental videos to support his 'SECRET LIFE' environmental science roadshows.

Joe is currently on the Board of Trustees of the 'Wicklow Democratic School' (formerly 'Wicklow Sudbury School'), a new school based on the Democratic Model.

'Secret Life' is an environmental science roadshow for primary schools which provides a framework for exploring and understanding biodiversity in the local environment. It was conceived, developed, designed and delivered by Joe in 2013-14 following the withdrawal of Educate Me from the European market.

It is a holistic learning programme developed to assist teachers in Ireland deliver the SESE curicullum and provide schools with the knowledge to engage with environmental conservation projects.

Joe has created a media rich immersive environment in which to learn about biodiversity and the environment in general.

"IGUANA focuses on modernising the school system; reducing school drop-out rates and ensuring that schools contribute effectively to making the EU ‘the most competitive economy in the world’. The key problem is resistance to change – or ‘stuckness’ – defined as ‘a person, a family, or a wider social system enmeshed in a problem in persistent and repetitive ways, despite desire and effort to alter the situation’."

The IGUANA PROJECT was a consortium of European academic and private education organisations lead by Roberto Carniero, Universidad Catolica Potuguesa & Joe Cullen, Arcola Research & The Tavistock Institute (UK). It was funded under the European Commission: Lifelong Learning Programme.

The Centre for Research in Information Technology in Education (CRITE), TCD, was a junior partner responsible for local research, academic evaluation, dissemination and local piloting of completed programme. Joe represented the Dept under the supervision of Prof. Brendan Tangney.
